STAUNTON'S GYPSY HILL PARK
The concert and performance season kicks
off in June and goes all summer.

Crimora Park to Grand Caverns,
Crimora/Grottoes. 10 miles

What to Expect: A long ride with good riffles along
a beautifully isolated stretch of river. Expect forested
banks interspersed by farmland, with occasional
mountain views to the east. Fishing opportunities
abound, especially for smallmouth bass. Concludes
at the big public park at Grand Caverns in Grottoes.
Get There: Follow U.S. 340 north from Waynesboro
to the village of Crimora. Turn left onto Va. 612 and
put in at the park's public ramp. Take-out at the
park at Grand Caverns. To get there from Crimora,
continue on U.S. 340 for 4.6 miles to Harriston,
where you'll turn left and follow Va. 778 for .2 miles
to Va. 825.
Rental & Shuttle Service: A mile outside of
Waynesboro on U.S. 340, Rockfish Gap Outfitters
offers canoe and kayak rentals for those with

What to Expect: The South River passes through
downtown Waynesboro and is the only Virginia
waterway of its size that maintains a cool enough

water temperature to support trout throughout
the year. By way of a partnership between Trout
Unlimited and the Virginia Department of Game
and Inland Fisheries, the river is stocked each
spring, and gives fisherman the chance to catch
25-inch trophies year-round. Accessible by way of
Constitution Park.
The Outfitter: Housed in a downtown storefront
just a few blocks from the river, the South River
Fly Shop provides guided adventures. If desired,
one-on-one instruction is included. Offers one or
two-person half- and full-day options. Packages

SWIM
Sherando Lake Recreation Area,
Sherando.

What to Expect: Fed by small creeks and springs,
this 25-acre lake is tucked away in the George
Washington and Jefferson National Forests. There's
a beach for family swimming and a small island
in the middle with a jumping rock that makes a
great departure for paddle-boarding. Camping and
picnic sites are available, as well as bathhouses
and a concession. Day-use passes are $8. Call (540)
